Best Chromebook For Linux 2022

Chromebook has come a long way, and its maturity (combined with the recent success of ChromeOS) has made it an increasingly viable option for Linux. With many developers now requiring Linux to be on their laptop, Chromebook is gaining momentum in this area – especially since Chromebook provides a full-blown desktop environment while still being lightweight, sleek, and very functional (equipped with a touch screen!).

ChromeOS is a fully-fledged operating system based on Gentoo. It consists of a simple command-line interface (CLI) and a GUI environment called “ChromeOS desktop,” similar to gnome 2. It doesn’t have any form of package management whatsoever, so you can’t install new packages or even delete files from ChromeOS using your terminal. However, it does come bundled with its kernel, making it possible for Linux applications to run at near-native speed.

There are essentially four ways to use Linux on Chromebook:

  • Booting: This is the simplest way to use Linux on Chromebook. You download the ISO file of your favorite distro, burn it or boot from a USB flash drive/CD/DVD, and you’re good to go.
  • Crouton: Crouton is an extension that will let you run another GNU/Linux distribution parallel with ChromeOS without shutting down the laptop. Thanks to this extension, you can enjoy both worlds at once! Let me explain how that works: It creates a separate directory for Ubuntu (or any other distro) with its root filesystem and kernel. This means that everything you do within ChromeOS stays within the ChromeOS environment (and vice versa for Ubuntu). However, if you want to do some task such as installing software, you can switch to the Ubuntu environment, install your software and then switch back to ChromeOS.
  • Chroot: To people familiar with Linux, there is a way to run another distribution without rebooting or using any other complex methods. In this method, one uses commands such as sudo/su/chroot. Basically, the idea is that you have an application running from within ChromeOS which will load up a terminal emulator at startup and start a new shell session in the chrooted directory of your choice (for example: /usr/local, /etc., etc.) where you can do anything just as if it were a standard Linux system. You can even enter into X Windows by running a’ Xephyr’ program, which starts a new X Windows session in the chrooted environment.
  • Dual-boot: This is another option you can use if you prefer multiple desktop environments or want to keep ChromeOS intact and use Linux for development purposes only. Your laptop would essentially have two operating systems in this method: one with ChromeOS and one with your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. A fine example of this method is ChrUbuntu.
  • ChrUbuntu is a version of Ubuntu that works on Chromebooks (and Chromeboxes). It’s made from the same ISO as the standard Desktop edition, so you get all the regular goodies such as Unity 2D, Compiz, etc.

About:

The Acer Chromebook 14 is a great laptop that works very well with Linux. It has a powerful Intel CPU, which makes it perfect for some of the more processor-intensive tasks in Linux, such as compiling code and editing videos. Moreover, it has the best screen for using Linux in laptop form. It is a Full HD IPS touchscreen which makes it very nice to look at and perfect for multi-touch gestures within GNOME or other environments.

Display:

The display is a decent 14″ 1080p panel that runs smoothly at 60Hz. It’s certainly not the highest resolution, but it will be more than good enough for most people and has very decent viewing angles. The display on this Chromebook is a full-HD 1920×1080 IPS screen, and it looks fantastic! There is no backlight bleed to speak of and very wide viewing angles (see pictures). The colors are vivid and never washed out, even at extreme angles.

Processor and RAM:

The Intel Celeron N3160 Quad-Core Processor is powerful, making this laptop perfect for chrome OS. It falls a little short when running Linux but still performs very well in most tasks with the default configuration of Ubuntu Mate installed. In addition, this Chromebook comes with 4GB of DDR3L Ram, which is more than enough for the light tasks that Chrome OS does.

Storage:

The Acer Chromebook has 32GB SSD storage which is not great but enough for chrome os (and Linux). It’s also upgradeable by removing some screws.

Ports:

The Acer Chromebook has several USB ports, a full-size HDMI port, and an SD card slot. All of these are very useful for hooking up all kinds of peripherals or just plain transferring your files quickly and easily between devices.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, this is an incredibly well-rounded Chromebook that will serve you well. It supports two operating systems (Chrome OS and Linux) which can either solve or create problems for you depending on your needs. I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a new laptop, especially if they want to use Linux!

Pros
  • Up to 12 hours of battery life
  • Powerful Intel Celeron N3160 processor
  • Durable aluminum chassis
Cons

Buying Guide

Before buying a Chromebook, it is really important to consider factors like time of use, what you expect from the system (web-surfing, document editing, etc.), storage capacity, etc., to have an ideal laptop for yourself.

Storage capacity

Chromebooks offer up to 100 GB of cloud storage on Google drive when the laptop is connected to the internet, i.e., when it has an active internet connection beyond that only 5GB-15GB of hard disk space will be available in your machine, which can be used to save some personal data like photos, movies, etc., rest everything will be saved on the servers in the cloud with google drive account(this also comes with free unlimited storage space). If you want to install any Linux distro on your Chromebook, you may need more space, which requires some gigabytes of hard disk space.

Memory (RAM)

Memory (RAM) is the only thing that can make any system faster, but it comes with some cost, i.e., the machine’s price goes high as the spec sheet mentions higher memory/ram size. Chromebooks are equipped with 2GB ram, and the average laptop(with full-fledged OS) has 4-8GB ram today (As per 2014-2015). Google claims that their system is so optimized that they don’t need more than 2GB to run flawlessly quickly, even if you have 20 chrome tabs opened at a time. However, it’s still advisable to go for 4GB or more RAM if you do heavy work, especially if you consider installing some other Linux distro.

Processor speed

Chromebooks have an average processor, i.e., Intel Celeron series chip, which is usually enough for normal web browsing and office work, but it can be sluggish if you run much software at a time; therefore, it’s recommended to go with a 4GB ram-processor combo(Intel Core i3/i5).

Screen size

Screen size depends on the purpose of the user because students need less screen space while business people want bigger screens because they use their laptops for watching movies, editing documents, etcChromebooks come in different screen sizes starting from 11 inches up to 15.6 inches(there are also bigger screen size options available but they are not worth considering because Chromebooks are lightweight machines so carrying 15.6 inch or 17 inch machine is not comfortable).

Battery Life

Chromebooks offer longer battery life(about 9-12 hours) when compared with netbooks (average 6 hours). That’s the reason you see many college students preferring Chromebooks instead of normal laptops. However, some other models in the market offer about 10-18hours of battery backup, like the Samsung Chromebook.

Design

The best thing about Chromebooks is their lightweight and sleek design with an aluminum finish. Still, it comes at a cost, i.e., the price goes up in this case, so the design is something where you can compromise(as per your requirement). Still, it’s better to build quality overlooks because Chromebooks are meant for rough use. They are lightweight, so you can easily carry them in bags, and normal laptop covers usually won’t fit well with these machines.
